Two early mornings in March, students at Madeira Elementary School (MES) brought their mothers, grandmothers, and other important females in their lives to school for juice, coffee, and muffins an hour before school started. The theme of the ‘Muffins with Moms’ mornings was ‘St. Patrick’s Day’ and featured a rainbow photo booth and leprechaun props, shamrock and green necklace crafts, and a performance by the Madeira Singers.
PTO organizers Jen World and Kelly Hilgeman attribute the success of the second Muffins with Moms, and last fall’s Doughnuts with Dads, to their committee of over 30 PTO volunteers. “It’s a special morning for moms and dads that involves the whole community,” Jen stated. “We have a 90% participation rate.”
The events give families an opportunity to be part of what’s happening in their children’s’ school, in their child’s school environment. Students are split alphabetically into two sessions on March 14 and 15so there would be room should all 722 students bring a guest.
The events’ success is also due, in part, to Madeira businesses Kroger and Coffee Please. Madeira Kroger’s Mike Meadows provided doughnuts, bananas and juice, and the coffee was courtesy of Lisa Schlake from Coffee Please.
