Madeira Middle School is sending four students to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) Inaugural Jr. High Track and Field State Championships on May 13 in Lancaster, Ohio.
Qualifiers earned spots from regular-season results. The 4x100 relay team of MMS eighth graders Sophia Davenport, Brooke Schomaeker, Marielle Thon, and seventh grader Chloe Torggler is currently ranked in 13th place with a time of 53.67. Sophia Davenport is also ranked in 3rd place for the 200m hurdles with a time of 30.45 seconds.
MMS Track coach Kelly Torggler stated, “I’m so excited for these girls that qualified for the state meet. This is the first year that the state of Ohio has had this event. It is for all schools combined, Divisions 1, 2 & 3 - so this is quite an accomplishment for these girls.”
The 10 running events and 5 field events will be held at Lancaster High School, 1312 Granville Pike, Lancaster, Ohio 43130. Field events will begin at 10:00 AM with track events beginning at noon. There will be two seeded heats per event.
The 7th and 8th grade track and field state championships will become only the second event the OHSAA has introduced for middle school students. The OHSAA Middle School Cross Country Invitational in October has been held for the last four years. “Many people might not know that the OHSAA oversees 7th and 8th grade sports, too, for member junior high schools,” OHSAA Commissioner Dr. Daniel Ross said. “We have been looking at ways to expand our involvement with middle schools and expand opportunities for them to get involved in a tournament setting. This will accomplish both of those goals and show them that when they compete in an OHSAA tournament event, ideals like sportsmanship, respect and camaraderie are the most important lessons to be learned.”
$6.00 digital admission tickets to the OHSAA 7th and 8th Grade Championships are available at OHSAA.org. Gates open at 8 AM.
