Madeira senior Mary Englert scored 19 points in the January 24 Amazon Girls Basketball game. One of those points broke the team’s thirty-seven year all-time scoring record.
In a packed home game against Reading, Mary scored her 1,516th point and became the team’s new top all time leading scorer. In the weeks leading up to the record-breaking game, the school and community held a countdown for her ‘magic number,’ while hoping the record would be broken at a home game.
Mary has been a starting guard on the basketball team all four years she’s attended Madeira High School (MHS), becoming a member of the 1,000 point club after the first three. Mary has also played softball and lacrosse at MHS, and was named top in the Cincinnati Hills League, as well as all South West Ohio, in soccer.
The day after the record-breaking shot, Mary reflected, “It is still a great feeling the day after, and people all around school keep giving me support and congratulating me. I am also really happy we had a great team win last night.”
Pam Mack Scott ’81 previously held the Amazon record with 1,515 points. Her daughter Carly is also a member of the girls basketball team, so Pam was in the MHS gymnasium for more than one reason when Mary made Amazon history.
“It truly was a storybook ending for having your record broken,” Pam proclaimed. “What are the chances of moving back to your hometown after 30 plus years and having your daughter be teammates with the player who breaks your record? It doesn't get any better than that!”
Congratulations Mary - you exemplify #MadeiraStrong!
