2011 Madeira High School Inductees


Josh Cohen
1995-1999
  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 4 years.
  • Started 40 consecutive varsity football games. He was known for three-point shooting, defense, and rebounding in basketball. Cohen was an outfielder on the 1999 Division III State Championship Baseball team.
  • Lives in Chicago and works as an operations direction at Research Development Implementation Inc.

Ashlee Edgell

 
2002-2006
 
  • Swimmming - 4 years.
  • Cross country - 4 years.
  • Won the Division II State title in the 200-yard individual medley event her sophomore, junior, and senior years. Madeira High School's only three-time state champion. Captain of the cross country team.
  • Four year member of the Notre Dame swim team after being awarded a scholarship there. Edgell graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor of science degree in 2011. She is participating in a clinical research fellowship at University Hospital in Cincinnati and lives in Madeira.

 

Bob " Grips" Gripshover

 
 1942-1946
  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 3 years.
  • Quarterback of the football team and co-captain of the team as a senior. He played first baseman on the baseball team.
  • Served in the Marines and then obtained a degree at Xavier University. Gripshover went to work for General Electric in both Cincinnati and Philadelphia. He died in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in 1975 at age 46.

Terry Hartley

 
1965-1969
  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 4 years.
  • Played offensive and defensive end on the football squad. Hartley was a scoring forward on the basketball team. He played catcher and outfielder in baseball and is emembered as a "consummate teammate."
  • Hartley Aattended Centre College where he played football. Went into teaching and coaching and spent 35 years at Deer Park High School in that capacity. He and his wife live in Finneytown.

Bill Kelly

 
1942-1946
  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 4 years.
  • Captain of the 1944 football team and co-captain of the 1945 grid squad. Remembered for his hard hitting on both offense and defense.
  • After a tour in the Marines after high school, he attended Notre Dame. Upon graduation from there, he spent many years working for International Harvester. He died in Moline, Illinois, in 1996 at age 68.

Alison DeWitt
1986-1990
  • Volleyball - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 3 years.
  • Softball - 3 years.
  • Highly motivated competitor. Solid server in volleyball. Definite leader at shortstop in softball. Point guard in basketball. Wrestlerette for three years.
Drew Cloran
1998-2002
  • Football - 4 years.
  • Wrestling - 4 years.
  • Hard-working, committed athlete. Scored 30 touchdowns and rushed for over 2,000 yards in his M.H.S. varsity football career. Was three-time qualifier for state wrestling tournament.

 
Ed Hausgen
1988-1992
  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 4 years.
  • Track - 4 years.
  • Played with intensity in each sport. Quick running back in football who also returned kick-offs, punts, and provided hustle on defense. Won 1992 Madden Award.
Mary Lou "Petie" Weber
1952-1955
  • Field Hockey - 3 years.
  • Basketball - 3 years.
  • Softball - 3 years.
  • Known for hustle and sportsmanship. Captained 1954 field hockey team who's wins included 1-0 victory over the University of Cincinnati. Pitcher and power hitter in softball.
Jane Kuykendall
Contributor
  • Beginning in 1970 and for many decades, Kuykendall was a part of all facets of  volunteering to serve the Madeira High athletics program. She joined the boosters in the late 1970's and is the stable, reliable, and familiar face of that organization.
 
Cathy and Charlie Schweppe
 Contributor
  • The Schweppes became involved in athletic and booster activities upon moving to the community in 1972. They are a tireless team in raising funds, working on projects and assisting. They are office holders on boosters.

  • From 1969-70 through 1996-97, he served as Assistant Coach in: football, basketball, baseball, and softball.  He was the Head Golf Coach from 1970-1975.

Bob Kearns
  • High school wrestling coach for 33 seasons
  • Athletic Director for ten years
  • Head Track Coach for nine years
  • Assistant coach in track and football.
  • His Wrestlers qualified for the state tournament 42 Times and won 270 dual matches!

Carole Yoshiko Toki
1974-1978
  • Track - 4 years.
  • Volleyball - 4 years.
  • Cheerleader.
  • Coached volleyball, winning awards in that capacity. Carole provided dynamic leadership in all sports she played.

 


Kris Kuykendall

1998-2002

  • Soccer - 2 years.
  • Wrestling - 4 years.
  • Won state division III wrestling championship in 130-lb weight class. Qualified for state tournament all four years. Career wrestling record 147 wins and only 13 losses; with 73 of those wins coming by pins.
 


 
Larry Pohlman

1944-1948

  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 4 years. 
  • Track - 1 year.
  • Quiet but regarded as a team player and one who could be counted on. Quarterback of the first elevan-man team in 1947.

Carwin Pleasant


1947-1951

  • Football - 4 years.
  • Basketball - 4 years.
  • Baseball - 2 years.
  • Track - 2 years.
  • Excelled in all sports. A fast running back in football and combined good shooting and quickness as a basketball guard. Left-handed-hitting outfielder in baseball.
