The Madeira City School District has been named number two in the Midwest and number one in Ohio for ‘Best Schools for Your Housing Buck’ by Forbes.com. The article ranks quality school districts that are also located in communities with affordable housing.
Beginning with districts that provide kindergarten through 12th grade and have more than 1,000 students, Forbes compiled the ratings by calculating percentile rankings on standardized tests for every school within each state. State-level ranks were adjusted to reflect the fact that every state uses its own standardized tests. The final criterion was towns and cities where the median home price was less than double the national median. Madeira was ranked second in the state of Ohio with an average housing cost estimate of $211,500.
Factors cited by Forbes that top ranked schools on the list have in common with Madeira are: small towns within driving distance of major cities, highly involved and dedicated parents, and independent foundations to help cover school costs without driving up property taxes. Our district's Foundation was founded in 1984 by a group of parents and community members who formed a corporation to assist the district in achieving its goals for quality education. The Madeira Schools Foundation sponsors an annual auction every spring which has helped pay for scholarships, auditorium seats, a new science lab, computer hardware and software, athletic facilities and more.
