Groundbreaking ceremonies were held June 1, 2022, for a new educational space at Madeira Elementary School. Designed by the architects at MSA Design, the space will be built by HGC Construction. Plans include 12 new classrooms, a new media center, maker space, and steam lab. Renovations will transform the existing steam room and media center into choir and band rooms.
The addition was planned after a feasibility study to evaluate current and future classroom needs indicating the district would be out of classroom space in several years at the middle school level. Madeira Elementary School’s footprint had enough available space to add classrooms and parking so plans were made for the district to begin housing grades K-5 at Madeira Elementary School and grades 6-8 at Madeira Middle School beginning in the 2023- 2024 school year.
To build the addition a combined 1 mil bond and 5.2 mils operating levy was placed on the November 2, 2021, ballot and passed - the first combined ballot for the community and the lowest ballot issue for the district in over 40 years. Just six weeks after the levy's passage, Madeira’s bonds were on the market and sold, allowing Madeira to take advantage of the lower interest rates before they went up in 2022. The district began the process of procuring the architects and construction company that will help the district continue to support the excellent programs and opportunities that Madeira's parents and residents have come to expect.
Madeira Superintendent Kenji Matsudo opened the June 1 groundbreaking ceremonies by welcoming the students, staff members, parents, and community members gathered. After remarks by Madeira School Board President Rich Palmer and MES Principal Chris Flanagan, introductions and pictures were taken with the Madeira School Board, Residents for Madeira Schools, Madeira Schools Foundation, Community Leaders, and MSA & HGC.
“We’re excited about planning for the future,” said Superintendent Kenji Matsudo. “Madeira is a special community with great schools, so it’s no wonder that lots of families would want to be a part of the Magic in Madeira.”
