Coffee and Conversation with the Community

Madeira City Schools Superintendent Kenji Matsudo recently welcomed a group of longtime residents to its fall
Senior Citizen Coffee held in the Perin Learning Commons at Madeira High School. The bi-annual event
offers community members a chance to reconnect with the district, hear first hand updates, and celebrate the
successes of Madeira students and staff.

Superintendent Matsudo opened the morning by talking about this year’s senior class, recent district projects,
and Madeira High School being named number two in the state of Ohio in US News and World Report’s Best
High Schools. Assistant Superintendent Dave Bergan spoke to the group about the recently released state
report card. He commented that Madeira has received the maximum star report card rating every year this
rating has been used by the state of Ohio and that Madeira’s Performance Index score ranked 8th out of 607
schools.

“We’re especially proud of our students and staff for their outstanding work. Since the inception of the State
Report Card in 1997-98, Madeira has always been regarded at the highest levels,” said Superintendent
Matsudo.“ Our legacy of delivering a high-quality education is strong.”

Toward the end of the coffee and conversation, Mr. Matsudo had arranged for the group to hear from MHS
seniors Boden Starr, Lily Morgan, and Lily Lex. Each student shared their experience at Madeira, what they’ve
been involved in, and their future plans. All three mentioned the impact their teachers at Madeira have had on
them and how special the close school and community of Madeira has had on their school years.

“I enjoy hearing the district news and accomplishments of my alma mater,” said Jim Decatur MHS Class of
1950. “I am always impressed with how well-spoken our Madeira students are and I couldn’t be more proud of
Madeira.” Among the community members in attendance were former Madeira school board members, parents
& grandparents of Madeira students, and alumni.

The spring coffee will be held March 31, 2027. Any Madeira senior citizen who would like to be added to the
mailing list for future coffees, or other district senior citizen events are asked to contact Diane Nichols at
