Global Classroom Committee

Origin

The Global Classroom Committee was formed as the result of a 2017 Planning Commission Study that analyzed feedback of graduates from Madeira City Schools.  Students expressed that the majority did not feel equipped with the cultural competency to enter the diverse world outside of Madeira.  In response the Global Classroom Committee formed during the 2018-19 school year. Members of the Global Classroom Committee are committed to the vision and goals of the group and trying to better tomorrow than we are today.

Vision Statement

  • To create safe & welcoming learning environments for all regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, family structure or economic status.

  • To broaden students’ worldviews to better equip them to live, thrive and contribute positively to a diverse world.

  • To engage in culturally competent practices that target the following core areas: value of diversity, cultural awareness, understanding the dynamics of cultural interactions, and taking cultural knowledge and adapting it to diversity and learning.

Goals

  • Investigate our current K-12 curricular resources and pedagogy to identify strengths, weaknesses, and potential opportunities to embed curricular connections related to global awareness.

  • Identify and share resources that support the vision of the Global Classroom Committee

Future Work

  • Continue full staff professional development to support the vision of GCC

  • Work with Instructional Leaders to review and refine current curricular practices in order to ensure materials used are culturally relevant and reflective of our diverse world.

  • Create resources for students and families with language barriers who are new to the community to help them feel welcomed and supported.

  • Work to recruit, hire and retain a diverse staff of professionals to work with our students and families.
