  • Welcome Back!

    Dear Parents,

Thank you for the opportunity to journey through fifth grade with your child as his/her reading and language arts teacher.  My name is Jen Yun, and this is my nineteenth year teaching middle school.  I have been at Madeira Middle School for seven years.  I’m so glad to be here!  My husband Gordon and I live in Montgomery with our two daughters, ages nine and fourteen.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me any time you have questions or concerns. I look forward to partnering with you to ensure a successful school year.

    Thanks,

    Jen Yun

    Reading In-Class
We mainly use a novel-based curriculum to cover the 5th grade standards.  This reading is also supplemented with a classroom textbook as well as Scholastic News and Scope magazines for additional readings.

    Reading At Home
Your child will be assigned a monthly book project.  Details will be given at the beginning of each month.  The directions will be listed on the pink sheet—this pink sheet is a weekly homework assignment, and a signature is due on Friday.    Your signature verifies the student’s home reading requirement.  We ask that each student engage in a minimum of 20 minutes of nightly reading.

    Vocabulary and Spelling
Your child will have a vocabulary or spelling test every Wednesday (these rotate each week).  Our vocabulary program is Wordly Wise and you will see this workbook as regularly assigned homework.  Our spelling program is computer-based and includes in-class and home practice.  The spelling program will use the Wordly Wise words.  The website is www.spellingcity.com

    Grammar and Writing Skills
We will have grammar units, and you will see this also as regularly assigned homework.  We will begin with a Western hemisphere country report; this coordinates with the Social Studies unit as well.  Another one of our early writing assignments will be a Veteran’s report.  We will ask for your assistance in helping your child find and interview a veteran.

    Homework
Homework will be posted weekly on Progress Book.  Your child’s planbook should also be kept up to date.  Reading and Language Arts papers will be sent home every Thursday.
